Question:
I've already acquired VISA and successfully reached US. The VISA's Control number is (禁則事項です). I'm planning to return to Japan (for a trip) on (いつだっていいじゃない). A problem is I lost some documents related to the VISA (due to a car break-in). Not the VISA and passport themselves, but (probably) copies of I-797 and I-129S. When I entered US for the first time (with the VISA), I was asked (by some airport officer) to bring those documents too when going back to Japan. He mentioned my documents. According to him, I need them in addition to VISA. My question is whether I can go to Japan without those additional documents. My understanding is yes, but there's no info for confirming it. Then I'm not sure why the officer asked me to bring them. Also, should I report the fact somewhere, and ask reissue?

Answer:
If you were told that you need the documents along with your visa at the Port of Entry (POE) by an immigration officer, you will most likely to be asked to show them when you enter the United States (U.S.) again.
Copies of I-797 and I-129-S(without signature) should be able to obtain from your company or petitioner.
As far as original I-129-S is concerned, we recommend that you obtain a lost/stolen report from Police authority, and you travel to the U.S. with copies of I-797 and I-129-S, and the lost/stolen report with valid visa. If you are anxious, you may also consult the issue to the USCIS.

U.S. Embassy is unable to guarantee the entry to the U.S. under any circumstances since it is the decision of an Immigrant Officer at the POE.
